Swami Vivekanand’s Historical Chicago address

‘Sisters and brothers of America’, the opening words of Swami Vivekananda reverberated with a peal of applause at the World Parliament of Religions held at Chicago on 11 September 1893 and it still echoes even today when we are commemorating the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s historic address at the Parliament of Religions, the first ever organized interfaith gathering in modern world. To mark the historic occasion All India Radio brings recording of the text of the two famous speeches delivered by Swami Vivekananda, in the voice of Shri Biplab Ganguly; first one on the opening session on 11 September 1893 where he introduced Hinduism, which taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance; and the second one was his address on the final session on 27 September 1893, where he famously proclaimed: “Help and not fight”, “Assimilation and not Destruction”, “Harmony and Peace and not Dissension.”
